Virasat

Heirloom sarees, remade into garments that get worn. Virasat means inheritance, and every piece in this collection began as somebody's saree — a heavy Banarasi, a Munga or Tussar silk, usually one that had spent years folded in a trunk because it was too precious to give away and too heavy to drape.

Each saree is opened out and read before anything is cut: where the border runs, where the anchal sits, which sections are sound. That reading decides the garment. A saree with a spectacular anchal becomes a jacket built around the anchal. One saree makes one garment, so these are one of a kind twice over — once as handwoven cloth, and once as the only garment that particular saree will ever become.
