A working trousseau is seven to nine sarees, not twenty. Two are ceremonial and heavy, three or four are for the events around the wedding, and two are for the first year of being married — the ones actually worn to other people's functions.

The third tier is the one people skip, and it is the one that gets the most use. A bride who bought nine ceremonial silks owns nine sarees she can wear roughly twice each in a decade.
The two ceremonial pieces
These carry the day. Two is genuinely enough — one for the wedding, one for the reception — and the second can be lighter than the first.
For the wedding itself, weight is not vanity. A saree that stands up under a heavy anchal, a garland and several hours of sitting needs real structure. The week around the wedding
This is where the trousseau earns its money, because these are the events people actually enjoy.
- Aiburobhat and the daytime rituals want cotton or a light silk-cotton. Something you can eat a large meal in.
- Gaye holud wants yellow, and wants a saree you do not mind turmeric on. Do not spend here.
- Mehendi and sangeet want colour and movement. Your hands are occupied or you are dancing; nothing that needs constant adjusting.
- Boubhat is the one to dress properly for. It is the first time the new family's circle sees you.

Within a year you will be a guest at several weddings, and you will not want to arrive in something obviously bridal. Two sarees solve it.
An off-white handloom saree with a floral motif is the versatile one — formal enough for a wedding lunch, plain enough for a puja. A gold saree with a wide woven border is the dressed-up one, and gold sidesteps the problem of clashing with whatever the bride is wearing.
Buy these last, after the ceremonial pieces are settled. They are the easiest to get right and the easiest to add to later.
What to check before you buy anything heavy
- Drape it in the shop. Six yards of heavy silk behaves differently on a body than on a hanger. Weight that feels luxurious across your arm can be unwearable pinned for six hours.
- Look at the reverse of the motif. On a real handloom brocade the reverse shows floats of thread and a legible mirror of the design. A flat, printed-looking reverse is a machine copy.
- Check the anchal end. Loose warp threads finished as fringe or tassels is handloom. A cut, machine-hemmed end is not.
- Budget for the fall and the pico. Every heavy saree needs both before it can be worn, and it takes days, not hours.
